I run the lowest octane I can use as long as it doesn't detonate. Octane is the rating of detonation resistance only. Typically, the higher the octane rating, the lower the energy content( BTUs/gallon, etc.). Seems foolish to spend more money for a lower performing fuel that gets consumed at a faster rate. If you're not running high compression or artificially aspirated, there's no valid reason to run high octane with low compression engines. If it's detonating, that's either an engine management issue or there's carbon buildup.
The only things that'll blow up an engine (besides improper parts/assembly/clearances) are:
1) insufficient lubrication,
2) excessive speed,
3) overheating,
4) detonation/preignition
Btw, John Meaney of EFI fame tunes his 1300 hp sbc Corvette on 87 octane. Combustion chamber design of the heads he uses is a key factor.

Well, your gas is Research Octane Number (ron), ours is (r+m)/2 that's
measured octane, which is lower.
I can get 100 octane here, but it's 2x as much.
Plato seems wrong to me today.

Yes Rob you are right and I was not so far off when I said "the european octan rating is about 3 points higher than the simular US gas" , from wiki :
Difference between RON and AKI
Because of the 8 to 10 point difference noted above, the octane rating shown in Canada and the United States is 4 to 5 points lower than the rating shown elsewhere in the world for the same fuel. This difference is known as the fuel's sensitivity,[4] and is not typically published for those countries that use the Anti-Knock Index labelling system.
