GMC Motorhome usage[ 32 votes ]
1. Casual 23 / 72%
2. Drifter 0 / 0%
3. Snowbird 1 / 3%
4. Other 8 / 25%

I thought a poll of how people use their GMC's would be fun...

Lets see where these Beauties shine.

Casual: Once and a while we travel.

Drifter: We seldom or never are home.

Snowbird: Get out of Dodge when the weather get's bad.

Other: We...?

This.

Or as a wasp habitat, apparently. :)

Someday it will be an adventure support vehicle though.

We picked our 77 Kingsley in June of 2011 from just outside Chicago. Drove
it approx 3000 miles home. Since then we have made
a trip to Disneyland in March of 2012 - approx 4000 miles, then in August
we left for the across Canada trip retuning thru the southern states -
14,500 miles.
A few shorter trips. in 2013 - Trips to Southern Oregon for Coos Bay
Rally, To Kelso for Cascaders Rally, Trip to Oregon Coast. Possibly 2000
miles.
Planned for 2014. Down to Portland in MAy then East to Detroit - tour
several Auto Museums plus the RV Museum then to Chicago and Start Route 66.
estimated 5000 miles.
Love the fellow GMC owners and the adventure.
Amazing FACT is my wife Sharon was a Hotel/Cruiser only adventurer HOWEVER
she has reformed and LOVES our time out in the Classic Coach.
We spent many special Birthdays and Anniversaries in the Harrison Hot
Springs Resort Hotel that is until we purchased our first 77 Eleganza Coach
in 2005 and since then we still go to the Resort for special occasions BUT
in our coach - stay in a RV campsite - walk to the Hotel for the Dinner and
Dance then back to the Coach for the night. Even in late October when it
can be rather chilly. Gotta Love it.
Other Plans in the future: Rolling Rally to Alaska; Rocky Mountian Loop;
Canyon Discoveries - Utah

Best Wishes to our GMC friends for the New Year

Dwayne & Sharon Jacobson

There isn't a check between casual and drifter.

Below contains only facts that can be verified and is not intended to implicate any party or persons.

We would be traveling much more than we are if a large portion of my investments had not been "redistributed". We are now resource limited to 11~13K per year that fluctuates with fuel costs. So, I don't know which is closer.

I bought the 23' GMC in April '98 to drive to Alaska (instead of the '97
Safari 40' diesel pusher we already owned) -- that summer. Catastrophic
engine failure on the way home from Texas with it, plus complete interior
renovation, plus construction of a retirement home for my folks, delayed
the 12,000 mile trip to Alaska (including ferry up) until 2000.

Since then we've used it for MANY Dixielanders and Sunshine Statesmen
rallies and about half of the GMCMI conventions. Including that in Santa
Rosa, CA. Many shorter individual trips capped with the t month, 10,000
mile, trip to Vancouver Island, etc., and back this summer. The first 1
month plus of that as with my 16 yo grandson, and the final 2 months with
HER. Hard to beat that experience.

When not USING the GMC, I'm usually working on it, either out of necessity
or simply to incorporate some new idea, whether my own or someone else's.
Who can match 3 each Olds 455 engine changes and 3 each Cad 500 engine
changes in one GMC in 15 years? Some necessary, others "for fun". :-)

Even SHE's learned to accept whatever occurs as part of the adventure.
(Can't say she really enjoyed the 3 mile trip to town pushing the GMC with
the Honda CRV though.)

Neither of us misses the 40 footer at all.

G'day,

Helen and I use Double Trouble to tour the USA during the Aussie winter. We've done four loops out of Houston so far and the next
one will be over to Arizona where we'll hang a right, head up to Montana, hang a left over to Washington, head across the border to
BC, then do a 180 and proceed down the left coast to San Diego and make a final left back to Houston.

I was an IDIOT and tore The Blue Streak apart because I didn't like some of the things the PO did and so far it has just sat in my
workshop in Sydney. DUMB DUMB DUMB!

At the Moment we are only using our Palm Beach to hold a bit of snow. Anybody know just how much the things will take? as an added bonus there is almost an inch of ice near the roof.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/misc/p52192-holding-snow.html

We do travel some in the summer we try for at least 1000 miles each year and usually get in closee to 2k.

Now that sounds like a great trip! I might be doing a similar trip but in a clockwise direction...it is America after all, not Australia. Things circle differently where you are. Wink

Family vacations mostly. It's also the family transport at Thanksgiving to the in-laws. Makes it easier to drive 650 miles each way when the kids can sleep, eat, and use the bathroom without stopping!

We are about 4 1/2 months in the coach including 3 months in Tucson and 8 to 10 rallies a year plus travel time. We really try to enjoy and use our coach as much as possible. Going to do more next year.

We are getting 3 to 5 long weekends a year.
Since buying mine a few years back we do manage to add a long weekend or 2 more each year than the year before. Some are with wife and I and our 3 dogs. Some just wife and I. and last year I did get 2 long weekends at music festivals just myself. most trips are with in 200 miles of home or so.
I guess we are somewhere between casual and other?

We bought ours to attend music festivals but have found that we have the most fun when our adult kids come home and we use the GMC to haul the whole family at one time. Kids love it, adults love it, and I get to drive, win-win for everyone.

Since "Odie" is in hover mode waiting on the brake fairy to bring needed parts. I continue on with my 3 year restore that now is in the third year. Put it's always nice just to sit in the doorway with a cool drink or cup of coffee and dream of trips to come.

I have used my motorhome for a slightly different purpose than most. I have
used it for GMCWS rallies, GMC Cascaders rallies, GMC 49er's rallies, Grand
touring across Canada with Dwayne and Sharon Jacobson & other GMC friends.
When my wife Mary became critically ill, I moved it to the hospital during
her final days to have a close by familiar retreat to recharge my
batteries. After her passing, it, and to a HUGE PART, the GMC Community,
played an immense role in my return to sanity after grieving her. My new
wife Judy Countermine and I attended the GMCWS rally in Palm Desert, CA on
our first date. Met the BEST MAN and MAID OF HONOR on GMC activities. The
GMC is a huge part of our daily lives as I work on them for other people,
as well as manufacture parts to keep them on the road. We just attended a
GMC Cascaders rally in Kelso, Wa. The temperatures never got out of the
20's Had a ball. Preparing for the Route 66 rolling rally in May, 2014. Use
em, don't park em.
