Looking for info on Fuel Pumps

What people are using Electric or Mechanical.

Also if In Tank or In-Line.

With Either of the Electric has it been worth the cost.

Also have vapor lock problems gone away ?

A lot of people use both a mechanical AND an inline hooked into the aux tank.

With in-tank pumps and with fuel injection I have not experienced any vapor lock problems. Cost of two fuel pumps (about $40.00 each) and some time (my time is not worth much:-) .

Added advantage of getting rid of the selector valve and having an always ready backup fuel pump. The disadvantage is having to drop a tank if a pump goes bad.

I just had to open this thread to see what a "Fuel Pimp Poll" was all about. Rolling Eyes

I get my fuel at a gas station... I don't use a fuel Pimp!

EFI with inline pump pumping 17 psi. Was very pleased about not having vaporlock problems in 45k miles... Until

Monarch Pass, CO.

It was hot but no hotter than we have driven in many times before.
It was high but we cross the Rockies every fall.
It was 85 octane with ethanol, but we use it every fall.

Hoses were all fixed, etc. I will check things again. It must be on the suction side as I doubt the gas was boiling on the 17psi side. When the pressure dropped to 5 psi hard to say what was happening on the pressure side.

I've got inline electric (and a mechanical at the front, of course). I've never had the first sign of vapor lock with the inline pump running, though I've only ever had vapor lock once with it off, and that was a typical Arizona summer day (temp on the pavement probably 120-130).

I've got mechanical on main tank and electric on reserve tank.

when your using e85 I assume you mileage is terrible???

As I used it in my Lincoln navigator 1 time and only got 11mpg when I get 19 normally.

Why use e85???

I use the stock mech pump plus an in line elect pump, works ok. 1974 26' glacier 455cu.

I use an external electric fuel pump (Carter P4070) on each tank, no mechanical pump (engine has a blockoff plate covering the hole). No vaporlock or other issues and a 'hot spare' in case a pump or filter fails while driving - just move the dash switch and use the other system. No failures so far in 6 years.

The blue bus had an inline electric with fuel pressure gauge but I'm replacing it with a Carter electric with built in pressure regulator plumbed in front of the selector valve. I live by the K.I.S.S. principle.

In tank pumps selected with gauge switch. No more hot day, high altitude cavitation issues, even on E10.

JimB installed a small Facet pump powered by the MAIN / AUX Selector valve circuit in Double Trouble. It's between the outlet of the
AUX tank and the inlet of the Fuel Selector Valve. If I have vapor lock problems I switch to AUX and Bob's you Uncle, the problems
gone!

Understand Rob. I have mine after the selector valve and have a T with a take-off barb after the output side, so I can run the pump and fill up my portable fuel tanks for my various toys while camping. I usually boon dock for a week or so without moving so I like to suck fuel out of the tanks selectively if that makes sense.

Same here. I seldom use it, but I also try not to buy craponol laced fuel whenever possible.


I guess I'm more of a creature of habit than I like to admit, but I tend to go to the same campsites up in the mountains and in the summer the temps are usually around 105 F. Sometimes I have to use the pump and other times not at all. Even though all of our fuel here is marked as 10% alcohol, it apparently seems to vary a lot in actual use. I can't explain the difference any other way.

If your mechanical pump is over 4 years old, best to replace as the
ethanol is deteriating the diaphragm and you'll have fuel in the crank case.
